Tulum is a resort town on Mexico’s Caribbean coast, around 130 km south of Cancún. The 13th-century, walled Mayan archaeological site at Tulum National Park overlooks the sea. It incorporates the clifftop Castillo, built as a watchtower, and the Templo de las Pinturas, with a partially restored mural. Inland, the Cobá archaeological site has pyramid-shaped temples with views over the surrounding jungle.
The city received in ancient times the Mayan name of Zamá (which in Mayan means dawn) and the present one, Tulum (which in Mayan means wall), that seems to have been used to refer to the city when it was already in ruins. For the numerous records in murals and other works found in the buildings of the city, it is considered that Tulum was an important center of worship for the so-called “descending god”.
Tulum was one of the most significant Mayan cities of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, as it is an essential stopover for the commercial routes of the Maya in their exploitation of the maritime riches of the coast of present-day Quintana Roo. At its best, Tulum emerged as the nexus between sea and land trade dynamics in the Mayan world. In fact, objects from various regions of the Yucatan Peninsula and Central America have been found in Tulum, which weighs the significance of this Mayan city for the trade of Old Mexico.
The Tulum National Park is the only terrestrial Protected Natural Area in the Cancun-Tulum corridor, an area increasingly under pressure from tourism that has been developing increasingly in the last decade and that is gradually reducing natural coastal areas By turning them into lodging sites. For this reason, it is of great importance we maintain one of the few natural redoubts of the region, which is also located around the archaeological zone known as the “walled” area of Tulum, one of the most beautiful archealogical sites still accessable to tourists and locals.
